Muthiah's Blackmore Marathon Run

Dear Nagarathars

I am proud to announce that our member Muthiah Ramanathan of Nachiyapuram residing at Pendlehhill represented our community in Harbour Bridge run and completed the running of 9.7 km in one hour. By this Muthiah has added another stone to the crown of our Sangam that we have members interested to contribute to Australian Community Charity. Important to note that he is one among the very few Indian Community participants in this event. It is not a competition event. This is an event organized by Aussie communities as a fund raising program with the support of NSW state Government.

I appreciate Muthiah Ramanathan.s effort in this event. I am confident that personalities like Muthiah Ramanathan are going to be the role model for our young Australian Nagarathars to get involved Sports related Charity events.

Muthiah- Keep up the sprit and train people like me and young Australian Nagarathars to participate in sports related charity event.

Mr. S. Muthiah’s lecture on “The Chettiar Heritage”

Mr. S. Muthiah, a Journalist and Historian from Chennai, gave a lecture about “The Chettiar Heritage” at Community Center, Carobran Drive, Vermont South, Melbourne on 22nd March 2006. About 20 to 25 people participated from Chettiar, Indolankan and Tamil community.

He is also author of “The Chettiar Heritage” book. Visit this link to know more about this book.

Excerpt of his Speech:

He covered Chettiar’s Historical background from Chola’s period to Pandia’s to British to 60’s to 90’s. He has highlighted that Chettiars didn’t start off as Money Lenders but as Traders, who can go way off in those days across the seas for trading and then how they became money lenders later.

How this money lending collapsed in other countries and deviated to other areas such as study, etc. Speech covered the 9 temples, our villages and population. Presentation shows how our community liked the architecture buildings and plans, supported by photographs.

He finished with plight of modern day Chettiars and trends.

Overall, it was a very interesting overview of Chettiar’s rich heritage.
